Amber Road
by Sherry Christie

Publication Date: September 30, 2020
Bexley House Books
Paperback & eBook; 503 pages

Genre: Historical Fiction/Thriller

Treachery amid the dark menace and magic of the German wilderness.

Spring, 38 AD. Far from the intrigues of Caligula’s Rome, the legion fortress of Carnuntum stands alone against the forested wilderness across the Danube River.

Ex-Army tribune Marcus Carinna waits nearby for his beloved, the Germanic priestess Aurima. Stunned by treason in his family, he sees one hope of earning back his honor: to recover a lost legion’s sacred Eagle captured by rebels. He needs Aurima’s help to succeed — but after promising months ago to win the support of her chieftain father, a brutal enemy of Rome, she still hasn’t returned.

When an imperial spymaster recruits him for a secret mission among the hostile German tribes, Marcus jumps at the excuse to search for her. But as his troops slog along the rutted track of the Amber Road, he will discover that he is not out of reach of his enemies’ vengeance — and that saving the woman he loves is going to demand more heart and will than he knew he possessed.

If you enjoy good historical fiction — rich, meaty novels that immerse you in another time, peopled with characters you truly care about — you’re the kind of reader likely to love AMBER

Praise for Amber Road

“I very much enjoyed Amber Road — a gripping adventure with believable characters. Drawn through the twists and turns, I never guessed what was coming next.” – Ruth Downie, best-selling author of the “Medicus” series

“An emotionally charged tale to say the least, my fellow readers. While there are many characters involved in this tale of honor, loyalty, and above all, love, the range and depth of feelings and passions of Aquilo (Marcus) and Aurima are what makes this sequel to Roma Amor such a pleasure to read. Mind you, that’s not the only reason, the underlying plot to reunite Aquilo and Aurima is chock full of excitement. Excitement in the sense that occasional pauses are required to take a breath, or to exclaim, “I didn’t see that coming!” Like the forest encased, and unnerving Amber Road, the pathway of this story is shrouded in surprises, urging the reader to tread further into the shadowy confines. A tale of personal anguish, trials, and fleeting joy, but also a tale of the ongoing dance of tension between Rome and the Germanic tribes who call that forest their home. 5 stars.” – Paul Bennett, Hoover Book Reviews

“Marcus is a man obsessed with restoring his family’s esteem but who’s also tired of politics, a stubborn skeptic regarding magic but in love with a priestess. In addition to a notable sense of historical authenticity, [Amber Road] promises relentless action conveyed at a breathless pace.” – Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Sherry Christie has been a writer ever since graduating from college, most recently as owner of a copywriting business. In all that time (even while living on a boat), she kept working on a novel about classical Rome. And revising. And starting over. And rewriting. And so on. Until she’d told a complex love story as well as she could. (P.S. She lives ashore now with a native Mainer and two rescue cats.)

AMBER ROAD is her second novel.

READ EXCERPT.

Marcus Carinna hears a voice whisper, “Your turn,” as he rides past his family tomb. An unseen presence also startles the Germanic priestess Aurima, whom he is bringing to Rome. But hardheaded Romans scoff at ghosts, and Marcus can’t believe it’s a warning from his brother, who killed himself three years earlier.

37 AD: To great acclaim, 25-year-old Caligula Caesar has become Rome’s new master. No one is more pleased than Senator Titus Carinna, who helped him succeed to the throne. It’s a shame the Senator’s older son–Caligula’s closest friend–committed suicide after being charged with treason. But that still leaves Marcus, his second son.

Headstrong and hot-tempered, Marcus would rather prove his courage by leading legions against Rome’s enemies than take his brother’s place. Yet when his father orders him to befriend Caligula, he has no choice.

Caught in a web of deceit, conspiracy, and betrayal, he will uncover a secret that threatens his family, the woman he desires, even his life… and may bring chaos to the young Roman Empire.

The first installment in a page-turning saga that revisits the heroes and villains of the grandest city of the ancient world…. Comes alive with the long gone characters who were its lifeblood” -Kirkus Reviews

‘Combines current political concerns, the wide lens of the serious historical novel, and emotional maturity and realism with an utterly splendid grasp of what it must have been like to live in Rome under Caligula’s reign.” -Sarah Smith, Agatha Award winner and New York Times Notable author
